Yakatabune

I was fortunate to have a few blissful years of celebrating my birthday dancing under the moonlight while sailing the San Francisco Bay aboard the most beautiful wooden schooner called Tiger.

In the grand tradition of those parties and in remembrance of Tiger’s dear Captain Luc, I invite you to join me for a cruise along the Tokyo Bay and surrounding rivers. Let’s kick off this great week together and make him proud.

  • Yakatabune first started during the Heian Era (794 - 1185) and was a hallmark of ostentatious luxury for feudal lords, samurai warriors, and, later, wealthy merchants. They are historically referred to as Japanese pleasure boats— are small ships adorned with lanterns that were used to host dinner parties where guests could mingle and socialize over food and drinks. Each boat was furnished with tatami mats and low tables, and featured entertainment such as music performances and poetry recitals as the boat cruised down the river.

  • Our dinner cruise will feature a 15 course meal, unlimited drinks, and karaoke in addition to unparalleled views of the city skyline over the water.

  • You’ll be seated in a traditional style tatami seating arrangement on the floor, so the key is to be comfortable. Wear socks, or be ok without your shoes on. Since we’ll be on the water, also bring a jacket to stay warm with.

If you really must know, I’m going Goth Sailor Moonish. Feel free to match my freak or don’t.

If you planned on attending and you are not on this list, please contact me immediately so I can update accordingly.

Please aim to arrive by 5:15 PM - Shinagawa Station is quite far from the downtown area and the dock is a 15 min walk from the train station.

Check in is at 5:30 PM and departure is at 6 on the dot. We will be cruising for 2.5 hours and will likely have some sort of afterparty planned for those who aren’t super jet lagged.
